SVPA Joins 28 Organizations Urging App Store Removal of Grok/X in Wake of Mass AI-sexual Harassment

On January 14th, the Sexual Violence Prevention Association (SVPA) joined Ultraviolet, a women-led gender justice organization, and 28 advocacy groups on two letters to remove Grok and X from the App Store and Google Play, the two largest digital distribution platforms. The first letter was directed to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. The second letter was for Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google.

The amount of explicit deepfakes have been rapidly increasing since their invention, with one study reporting the number of deepfakes doubles every six months, Grok, Elon Musk’s AI company, has been a driving force behind the increase of explicit deepfakes, also known as deepfake porn or AI-generated nonconsensual explicit materials (NCEM).

In early August, 2025, Grok introduced a “spicy” mode, specifically designed to create extremely realistic AI-generated pornographic images. Recently, Grok posted an apology on Twitter/X for producing and sharing an image that sexualized two young girls, ages 12 to 16. In the tweet, Grok admitted it violated “ethical standards and potentially US laws on CSAM.”

Gienvieve Oh, a deepfake researcher, found Grok generates about 6,700 “sexually suggestive” images per hour and 85% of Grok’s generated images are sexualized. These AI-generated non-consensual intimate images (NCII), including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), were posted regularly on Grok’s X account.

This is not Grok’s first offense promoting digital sexual violence. In October of last year, SVPA submitted testimony to the US Senate detailing pedophilia, child sexual abuse, and other forms of sexual violence perpetrated by Grok. A few months prior in August 2025, SVPA urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state Attorneys General (AGs) to investigate Grok for sharing AI NCEM and deepfake pornography.

In response to the pressure from advocacy groups, lawmakers, and international governing bodies, Musk announced Grok’s abilities to generate images would be limited exclusively to paid  Twitter/X users. This was far from a solution as it still permitted thousands of people to generate AI-NCEM.  Further, it commodified the issue, effectively saying, “If you pay for Twitter/X, you can create deepfakes of anyone you want.”

The 28 advocacy organizations urged Apple and Google to remove Grok from their app stores by explaining how Grok was violating each company’s guidelines. For example, Apple’s App Review Guidelines require apps to “comply with all legal requirements in any location where you make them available” or Google Play’s “Child Endangerment Policy” that prohibits apps that promote sexualization of minors.

The coalition letters detail the immense harm, child endangerment, and digital sexual violence that has been allowed, and even encouraged, on Grok and X. SVPA is proud to stand alongside national organizations, advocates, and survivors demanding the removal of Grok and X from Apple and Google’s app stores.
